Drama Department
There are many academic and extra-curricular opportunities
offered by RGSS Drama. RGSS Drama
encourages all RGSS students to drop by the drama studio. During the school day, students can be found engaging
in academic classes, participating in production rehearsals, getting involved
with the school’s technical crew, and learning general communication
skills. The drama studio is an artistic,
inclusive environment where all students are welcome to drop by and play some
improv!
Why
should YOU take DRAMA in grade nine?
Grade Nine Drama Open (ADA 1O) is an excellent introductory
course to the secondary school arts curriculum and the different opportunities
offered by RGSS Drama. No
experience or audition is required for introductory drama courses!!! Grade Nine Drama Open offers students the
following:

an opportunity to earn an arts credit in an
inclusive and energetic environment
Þ
an opportunity to build transferable skills by
using drama as a technique to improve team work, communication, and problem
solving skills
Þ
a general introduction to different dramatic
techniques and theatre history, including scene work, comedy, movement pieces, playwriting,
technical theatre, children’s theatre, and directing
Þ
an opportunity to meet students from different
areas of the RGSS community
Þ
an active, challenging, kinesthetic,
experiential, hands-on learning experience
It
is recommended that ALL GRADE NINE STUDENTS sign up for ADA 10.
After completion of ADA 10, students can continue to take
either academic courses or production based courses until grade twelve. All senior level courses match university
acceptance criteria. For a list of

2014-2015 Drama Courses
Academic/Skills Stream
Grade Nine ADA 10 Open
This course
emphasizes the active exploration of dramatic forms and techniques, using
material from a wide range of authors, genres, and cultures. Students will
construct, discuss, perform, and analyse drama, and then reflect on the
experiences to develop an understanding of themselves, the art form, and the
world around them. Prerequisite: None
Grade Ten ADA 20 Open
This course requires students to actively explore dramatic
forms and techniques, using their own ideas and concerns as well as sources
selected from a wide range of authors, genres, and cultures. Student learning
will include identifying and using the principles of space, time, voice, and
movement in creating, sustaining, and communicating authentic roles within a
drama. Students will assume responsibility for decisions made in the creation
and presentation of the drama, and will analyse and reflect on the experience. Prerequisite: None
Grade Eleven ADA 3M University/College
This course requires students to create and to perform
dramatic presentations. Students will analyse, interpret, and perform works of
drama from various cultures, including Western plays from around 1900. Students
will also do research on different acting styles and conventions for their
presentations, create original works, and analyse the functions of playwright,
director, actor, producer, designer, technician, and audience. Prerequisite: ADA1O1 or ADA2O1
Grade Twelve ADA 4M University/College
This course requires students to experiment with forms and
conventions in dramatic literature, and to create, script, and present original
and adapted works. Students will do research on dramatic forms, conventions,
themes, and theories of acting and directing from different historical periods,
and apply their knowledge of these in interpreting dramatic literature,
including Canadian works and works from various cultures in the late twentieth
century. Students will also examine the significance of dramatic arts in
various cultures. Prerequisite: Grade
11 Dramatic Arts, University/College Preparation or Open
Musical Theatre/Public
Performance Stream
Grade Eleven Musical Theatre ADB 3M University/College
This course requires students to create and to perform
in a Musical Theatre Performance. Students will analyse, interpret, and perform works of
drama from various cultures, including Western plays from around 1900. Students
will also do research on different acting styles and conventions for their
presentations, create original works, and analyse the functions of playwright,
director, actor, producer, designer, technician, and audience. Students will
combine their drama, music and dance skills as a cast member of Richmond
Green’s dramatic production. Students will be expected to attend
rehearsals outside of class time. Prerequisite: ADA1O1 or ADA2O1
