Message From Our Trustee

CordovaHead.jpgI would like to welcome everyone back from the winter break. I hope everyone is feeling refreshed and had a happy and safe holiday.

It is my honour to serve as your school board trustee and to uphold the values of York Region District School Board. The new Board of Trustees was sworn in on December 3, following the October municipal elections. Together, we look forward to moving forward the four priorities outlined in the Trustees’ Multi-Year Strategic Plan:
  • Foster well-being and mental health
  • Build collaborative relationships
  • Champion equity and inclusivity
  • Empower ethical leadership

There are a lot of exciting things happening in our schools and classrooms to foster and support student well-being and mental health. It is important to ask your child what’s happening in their school, and what they are doing to take care of themselves. As adults, we often focus on the health and well-being of the children in our lives, but it’s also essential that we take care of ourselves. Taking time to do the things we enjoy and nurture our own health is also important and helps to model a healthy and active lifestyle for our children.

An important part of my role as a trustee is to listen, and I look forward to connecting with members of our school community in the coming weeks and months. We will continue working to build collaborative relationships with our communities and to keep you informed about the things happening in the school board. I wish you all the best as we enter 2019.

Message from the Chair

I’m pleased to share that at last night’s Board Meeting, trustees voted for a by-election to fill the vacant Georgina Trustee position.

Having a by-election means the residents of Georgina have a fair and democratic process to select their representative. We wanted to ensure a fair and transparent process and that’s why we held a community consultation to ensure community concerns were heard.

I want to thank everyone who shared their thoughts and feedback on the replacement process.  A number of people attended information sessions in Keswick and Sutton, and also provided feedback through social media and by contacting us directly.

Following yesterday’s meeting, Board staff members will contact the Town of Georgina to initiate the process for a by-election. The Town will coordinate the by-election in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act. Once dates, locations and other relevant information have been determined, that information will be available for voters. The Board website will continue to be updated as information becomes available.

For residents interested in running for the position or learning more about the role of Trustees, I encourage you to look at the information available on our website.
Sincerely,

Loralea Carruthers
Board Chair
