EXPLORING FAMILY STUDIES  – HIF1O1  [Grade 9]
This course is an introduction to family studies. Students will learn how to become responsible members of society and acquire the skills needed to make the transition to adulthood. They will explore the functioning of families, relationships, communication, decision making, and youth homelessness. This course will introduce students to working in the kitchen and teach them how to sew and create a pair of pajama pants. Students will get to EAT their kitchen creations. Students will learn how to use social science research skills as they explore topics related to individual and family needs and resources in various countries.

FOOD AND NUTRITION – HFN2O1 [Grade 10]
Do you enjoy FOOD? In this course you will learn the basics of Nutrition while experimenting in the Kitchen connecting concepts such as Protein and Calories to Food Labs. This course will explore topics such as body image, food additives, and factors that affect decisions about food. You will learn to work in the kitchen as you develop the food preparation skills to Cook and Bake. You will also get to EAT your kitchen creations.

UNDERSTANDING FASHION – HNC3C1 [Grade 11]
This course introduces students to the world of fashion. Students will gain an understanding of theories related to fashion trends and of how culture, media, fashion cycles, retailing, and social and environmental factors influence fashion trends and consumer behaviour. Students will use various tools, technologies, and techniques safely and correctly to create fashion items. They will apply knowledge of fibres, fabrics, and the elements and principles of design when creating and assessing fashion-related products. Students will develop research skills as they investigate topics related to fashion.

WORKING WITH INFANTS AND YOUNG CHILDREN – HPW3C1 [Grade 11]
This course prepares students for occupations involving children from birth to six years of age. Students will study theories about child behaviour and development, and will have opportunities for research and observation and for practical experiences with young children. Through study and practical experience, students will learn how to meet the developmental needs of young children, communicate with them, and effectively guide their early behaviour.Students will become familiar with occupational opportunities and requirements related to working with infants and young children. Students will have opportunities to develop research and critical-thinking skills as they investigate and evaluate current research about early childhood education.

HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM – TFJ3E1 [Grade 11]
Like to EAT? Learn to COOK & BAKE! This course enables you to acquire knowledge and hand-on skills related to the food, beverage, and restaurant industry. You will perfect you knife skills and learn how to prepare, present, and serve professional quality food using a variety of tools, equipment, and media. This course enables you to develop an understanding of the fundamentals of culinary art and learn how to provide high-quality service to ensure customer satisfaction. This course will prepare you for post secondary education and career opportunities in the food industry.

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT THROUGHOUT THE LIFESPAN – [Grade 12]
This course offers a multidisciplinary approach to the study of human development throughout the lifespan. Students will learn about a range of theoretical perspectives on human development. They will examine threats to healthy development as well as protective factors that promote resilience. Students will learn about physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development from the prenatal period through old age.  Students will learn about brain development, bonding and attachment, language acquisition, and socialization. They will develop their research and inquiry skills by investigating issues related to human development.
FIELD TRIP: Observe children at a Daycare in the community
 
FAMILIES IN CANADA – HHS4C [Grade 12]
This course enables students to develop an understanding of social science theories as they apply to individual development, the development of intimate relationships, and family and parent-child relationships. Students will explore a range of issues relating to the development of individuals and families in contemporary Canadian society as well as in other cultures and historical periods. Students will learn about dating, relationships, marriage in various cultures, and analyse current issues and social trends. They will develop the investigative skills required to conduct research on individuals, intimate relationships, and parent-child roles and relationships in Canada.

This course enables students to draw on sociological, psychological, and anthropological theories and research to analyse the development of individuals, intimate relationships, and family and parent-child relationships. Students will focus on issues and challenges facing individuals and families in Canada’s diverse society. Students will learn about dating, relationships, marriage in various cultures, and analyse current issues and social trends. They will develop analytical tools that enable them to assess various factors affecting families and to consider policies and practices intended to support families in Canada. They will develop the investigative skills required to conduct and communicate the results of research on individuals, intimate relationships, and parent-child relationships.

SOCIOLOGY OF GENDER AND SEXUALITY – IDC4O3 [Grade 12]
This course examines the societal attitudes and behaviours related to human sexuality and gender issues within contemporary Canada. Gendered divisions in the family and workplace, the role of government in equity issues and the process of socialization will be examined. Also, topics to be considered are; history of sexuality, gender roles, influences on gender and sexuality, sexual orientation, adolescent sexuality, male and female anatomy, reproductive systems, contraception, sexually transmitted infections, sexuality across the life cycle; sexuality and liberation; intimacy, love and relationships; violence and the law, and sexual behaviour. Other social issues relating to sexuality will be examined as well.
