"History is a relentless master. It has no present, only the past rushing into the future. To try to hold fast is to be swept aside..." (John F. Kennedy)

Welcome to the Thornhill History Department Website. The TSS History department offers a wide variety of courses, from grade 10 Canadian History, and Civics, to Grade 11 Philosophy, Ancient Civilizations, American History, and Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology, and Sociology, and Grade 12 History Through Film, Politics, Genocide Studies, Challenge & Change, Philosophy, and The West & the World From the 16th Century.

History classes at TSS focus on skill development through various methods of historical inquiry that encourages students to enhance their critical skills of argumentative analysis and conceptualization through methods of in-depth research, essay writing, public speaking, and debate.

All of our department members work to create a welcome learning environment, where the details of history are open to interpretation and opinion, and therefore intelligent discussion and debate is encouraged in all classes. The result is a department that focuses on much more than simply copying overheads, but rather going beyond the simplistic boundaries of the  course text and into the real world of endless sources of information regarding political meetings, the division of nations, oppression of people, bloodshed and peacemakers. This is how the modern study of history is conducted, and it is the dogma of all TSS History teachers.
