Music Department

Are you driven by a love for music?

Are you looking for friends with a shared passion for creating beautiful melodies?

Are you searching for life-changing performance opportunities?

That may seem like a lot to promise, especially in these tough times, but the Thornhill Secondary School Music Department always finds a way! Whether it be supplying instruments for home use, extra rehearsals, department socials or virtual learning that the pandemic has brought, we are a strong family of musicians and people who never let anything dampen our spirit! We would be delighted to have you join our family and create some magical musical memories with us. Whether you want to continue to develop your skills from elementary school or try something entirely new, we’ve got something for everyone. We offer a full range of courses from Instrumental Music to Band Repertoire, Piano and Vocal. We also feature a complete Guitar program.

Taking a music class is not only a fun way to earn a credit, but a great way to meet others with similar interests. Connect to the school community with our special events, experience the exhilaration of performing at our Winter and Spring concerts, share your talents at

our semi-annual Coffee House nights, challenge your musicianship skills at regional music festivals, or pursue leadership opportunities in our student-led Music Council. There are lots of things in store in the Music Department at TSS. We look forward to seeing you!

WHY TSS MUSIC?

• A fun way to earn your Arts credit, an elective credit through day class, or an extra credit through after-school band repertoire.

• Being part of the Music department helps transition to high school easier by connecting with a family of fellow musicians.

• Every student is welcome, regardless of experience.

• Builds teamwork and leadership skills.

• Encourages discipline and patience.

• Provides opportunities to perform at Music nights, on elementary school tours and as part of in-school events.

IN THE WORDS OF STUDENTS...

“ Music helps people come together. For me, it was easier to meet new people and make great friends through the music program.”

“This year, I most enjoyed seeing how the band grew and came together. The improvements across each of our performances were clear

and awesome to experience and listen to. Personally, I think I improved most on my ability to play dynamics more effectively to create

character in music pieces.”

“Next year, I have already joined the day class and after-school band class because Music has made this year so much fun. Overall, I really enjoyed this year’s music program and I would recommend all incoming grade 9s to take it because they will have tons of fun while

learning and playing music.”
