Music Department

Music plays such an important role in our society.  It brings people together, evokes strong feelings, allows personal expression and fosters creativity.  Through our music programs students will not only find in music a source of enjoyment and personal satisfaction, but also gain creative problem-solving skills, individual and cooperative work habits, knowledge of themselves and others, a sense of personal responsibility and self-discipline, and connections to their communities and future careers.

The study of music will help students to understand how effectively composers and performers communicate to their audience.  By reflecting and analyzing different types of music, students will develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their communities.  With consistent practice of the conventions in music, students will be able to express and organize their ideas more effectively and use their imagination to achieve artistic beauty.

In the Thornhill Music Department students will learn cooperative and interpersonal skills where students work together to achieve a common goal. They will develop self-discipline while refining their musicianship.  They will build and develop leadership skills, learn responsibility and commitment and have many opportunities to contribute positively to our school and community.  Many of these are life skills that our students may take with them to help them be successful, contributing adults.
