Welcome to the Thornlea History Department!

Thornlea's History Department uses a modern-learning approach when exploring critical questions and concepts of Canada’s history over the decades. Teachers invite students to use critical thinking skills when using a variety of authentic sources when researching topics from our country’s past.

Classroom lessons and units incorporate digital media tools, interactive activities, multimedia resources and classic films to keep students engaged. Through classroom dialogues, debates and dramatizations, students are able to integrate the key concepts of historical thinking and the Political Inquiry process into their learning. History students engage in meaningful discussions to improve their communication skills; reading and writing tasks to improve their literacy skills; and collaborative tasks to build confidence and broaden their intellectual horizons. Teachers use diverse and differentiated assessments to evaluate the learning of their students.

Our department offers fun educational field trips, such as visits to Queen's Park, the Provincial Courts and the Holocaust Education Centre, as well as inviting guest speakers to our school. These include police officers, lawyers, judges, Holocaust survivors, military personnel, and authors of all kinds.

Lastly, the History Department also plays a leading role in the school's Remembrance Day assembly each year.
