At Wellington
Public School, we pride ourselves on our emphasis on Academics, Athletics
and the Arts as well as building character and leadership skills through
the principles of our Touchstone. Through the hard work of dedicated staff
members, the students and our parent community have been able to develop
and provide programs that serve to meet the needs of a diverse student
population including the Primary, Junior and Intermediate divisions and
both mainstream and gifted students.

Character
Education/Equity Education: An aspect of our School Plan for Continuous Improvement includes
morning announcements highlighting a "Thought of the Day" that fosters
reflection and in-class discussions. To encourage the character education, every month the school recognizes students in all classrooms that have demonstrated the Character trait of the month during our monthly Touchstone Assemblies. The Student Council is also supporting various
extra-curricular events such as dances and theme days and allows more
student voice to better represent the needs of our students and the various
initiatives at Wellington. We constantly strive to provide a positive
learning culture where everyone belongs.
School Council:
The parents are
well represented by the School Council. The Council acts to advise the
administration relative to the interests of the school community, support
program enhancements and events that help to engage parents in their
child’s learning. Included in this initiative is our support of an
increasingly multi-cultural community. The YRDSB remains committed to the
inclusion of anti-racist and equity education in its policies and programs.
Some of our Parent Reaching Out activities in the past reflected this goal.
Literacy and Math: Literacy skills are critical for success
in all aspects of life. As such, we are focusing our efforts to enhance our
students' skills in reading comprehension and the ability to explain their
learning. Additional resources have been purchased for the library by the
School Council and through a cost-sharing program, they have supported the
addition of more technology in the school. Wellington is focused on delivering a comprehensive math program to all students that is is consistent with the goals of the school board and the Ministry of Education's math strategy.
Extra-curricular: Wellington Public School (formerly
Aurora Senior) has a long history of excellence in athletics. Our large
double gym is adorned with pennants won by our school teams over the years.
We have an excellent facility that is often used for YRDSB Area and
Regional basketball and volleyball tournaments. We also offer many active
extra-curricular programs that run during lunch hour and recess. The staff provide
other opportunities for students to participate and excel in various clubs
and programs such as our Intermediate Band, Chess club and other club's that often run thanks
to the initiative and leadership of our students.
Parent Engagement: Like any school, parents play a very
important role. Over the past few years they have been actively supporting
our academic, athletic and arts programs. It is our continued goal to keep
parents well informed about individual student success and invite parents
to participate in programs at the school. We all benefit when parents are active
and involved in student learning.
