As with each school in the York Region District School Board, Willowbrook Public School supports student learning through curriculum standards set out by the Ontario Ministry of Education and many other co-curricular activities.

Our school:
  • Promotes a safe and supportive learning environment.  This is done through the board's Safe Schools Policy and Procedures and the Character Education Initiatives
  • Provides Special Education Programs
  • Provides English as a Second Language Programs
  • Provides Reading Recovery program
  • Literacy Collaborative Program
  • Student Support Centre
  • Provides a homework club
  • Provides a Before and After School Program with service provided by the YMCA
  • The school curriculum is enhanced by a  "Partners in Action" approach to learning, integrating information skills into classroom programs, using a wide variety of print, non-print, and technological resources from the school's Learning Resource Centre.  Curriculum related field trips and an arts program add an important dimension to the school.
We are also very proud to offer the following programs to our students:
  • Anti-bullying programs
  • Guest speakers and workshops
  • Ongoing and informal social skills counseling
  • Student leadership program
  • VIP program
  • Junior Achievement program
  • Students may participate in a variety of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities.  Programs such as cross-country, volleyball, basketball, concert band and primary and junior choirs are offered.  A parent volunteer coordinates service providers who deliver lunchtime and after school programs for interested students in the areas of arts and science.
Safe and Supportive Schools/Character Education/Equity Education

Every student has the right to learn in a safe and supportive environment. The York Region District School Board has a Safe School Policy and a defined procedure to implement the policy.  Both the policy and procedure support the view that student discipline involves a continuum of support including prevention, intervention and appropriate consequences.  The YRDSB remains committed to the inclusion of anti-racist and equity education in its policies and programs.

In addition, Willowbrook supports the development of character education to provide students with what they need to become respectful students in the school and the community. The following is an overview of the school's Character Education initiatives:
  • Visible presentation of Character Matters principles and attributes through posters, daily quotations, and the agenda book

  • It is infused in school culture through policy and procedures that reflect character attributes such as the Behavior code, the Discipline policy, classroom management and the dress code. The school structure allows for character education through the administration, the students, the staff and the community both formally and informally.  Students are recognized and the behaviors are reinforced.  All co-curricular activities both implicitly and explicitly promote character development.  There are growth opportunities for students such as leadership opportunities and peer tutoring.

  • There is explicit recognition through speakers and special presentations.
