Math Department

The Mathematics Department is committed to support the academic success of all students in accordance with the Ministry guidelines and board policies. We believe in the value of communication and welcome the input of parents and guardians. Please feel free to contact the Math teachers of your child should you have any questions or concerns regarding the progress of your child.

The IB program of the Mathematics Department continues to thrive with the support of the teachers and the outstanding commitment of the students. It is a significant component of the Mathematics Department with the IB preparatory programme starting at Grade 9 and finished at Grade 10. The purpose of the preparatory program is to develop and consolidate skills in mental Math, critical thinking and problem solving, which are essential for success in the IB programme in the senior grades. The performance of our students in the IB programme is excellent, above expectations. In addition to the IB curriculum, the IB Math programme also meets the expectations of the Ontario Math curriculum. Therefore, the IB students will obtain two Ontario Math credits (MHF4U and MCV4U) in addition to the IB credit upon completion of the programme.

The regular Math program is an integral part of the Mathematics Department. In order to obtain the Ontario Secondary School Diploma, students are required to have a minimum of three Math credits. Math courses are mandatory for students in Grades 9 and 10. In addition, Math courses are offered at university/college and workplace preparation for Grades 11 and 12, in order to provide students with options for the third compulsory Math credit and university/college preparation. Since most Math credits are graduation requirements and/or prerequisites for university/college admission, the Mathematics Department is committed to maintain effective teaching and learning through a wide variety of professional resources, regular monitoring of student progress, and sharing of best practices among teachers.

The Mathematics Department also believes in success for all students. Therefore, teachers, together with the help of the senior Math students, offer regular remedial help after school to support the underserved and underperforming students. In addition, one-on-one peer tutoring is also available to students, who prefer individual support. Please contact your Math teachers to make the necessary arrangements. We are committed to support the academic success of each and everyone of our students.

The Mathematics Council, which is elected by students, plays a significant role in developing leadership, and promoting interest in Mathematics among the student population.  Through various events, workshops and webinars, the Mathematics Council keeps students engaged and encourages them to take risk in a protective and nurturing environment.  It offers students opportunities to develop their leadership skills and critical thinking abilities.  It also prepares students to be future leaders of the school community.  In fact, a significant number of students who participated in the activities organized by the council, have expressed an interst in leading the Mathematics Council the following year.  The Mathematics Department strongly supports the initiatives taken by the Mathematics Council.

Last but not the least, the Mathematics Department also encourages and offers support to students, who are interested in participating in the following Mathematics contests:

  • American Mathematics Competitions – AMC-10 and AMC-12
  • Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC)
  • Waterloo Mathematics Contests
    • Canadian Senior and Intermediate Mathematics Contests
    • Pascal, Cayley and Fermat
    • Fryer, Galois and Hypatia
    • Euclid

We believe that the participation in the contests not only consolidate Math skills, but also develop self confidence for the participants.  They are excellent opportunities to extend what students learned in the classroom to the international and/or national context.  Our students usually achieve outstanding results in these contests.  We would like to wish the students, who plan to participate in the contests this year, all the best in their endeavors!
