ARTS MACKENZIE
The Arts Mackenzie program is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop strong artistic skills in a safe, inclusive environment. With an enriched curriculum and exposure to professional artists, the Arts Alexander Mackenzie experience is demanding yet rewarding.
Arts Mackenzie is one of four secondary schools offering the Specialized Arts program in the York Region District School Board. The Secondary Arts Program is a four-year intensive arts program for artistically talented students in York Region. This program includes a package of eight specialized arts credits offered as part of the high school curriculum. Applications for all Secondary Arts Programs are due in early December each year. The AMHS Arts programs include: Dance, Drama, Music (band, strings, vocal) and Visual Arts.
Arts Mackenzie accepts students from elementary schools in the Central area of the York Region District School Board. Entry into the Grade 9 Arts Program is through an audition and/or portfolio presentation process in January of the student's grade 8 year. There are a maximum of approximately 115 spaces available across the four Arts disciplines. In grade 9, students will study in their focus area for two of their eight courses. They will join the core grade 9 students for their other six courses. The Arts program is non-semestered and will involve guest artists, field trips, and some after school practices/rehearsals/studio work as well as classroom instruction.
The Arts Mackenzie program is a collaborative effort on the part of the school and its Arts departments, including Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Art. We have a strong emphasis on transferable skills that encourage students to become independent, successful high achievers in any field. Arts Mackenzie offer a pre-professional programme that builds a foundation of success for all students, regardless of their post-secondary pathway.
