Programs
As with each school in the York Region District School Board, Armitage Village P.S. supports student learning through the curriculum standards set out by the Ontario Ministry of Education and we offer many co-curricular activities.

A focus on Mathematics:  Mathematics learning and concept understandings are key focus areas in our school.  We know that strong skill development in mathematics is a good predictor of later successes throughout schooling and throughout life. Our students are engaged in rigourous problem solving and Growth Mindset thinking is promoted.

A focus on Literacy: Reading, writing and oral communication skills are essential learning for every student. We have many programs happening a the school to enhance students' learning such as our reading buddies program where older students partner with the younger students for reading and literacy learning, Red Maple and Silver Birch voting programs, Primary Book Room, Junior Book Room, classroom guided reading programs, and small instruction reading groups, and our Reading Recovery intensive instruction program for struggling grade 1 students.

A focus on The Arts: We have an intermediate instrumental band. Students in grades K-8 receive music instruction using different instuments from our Music teacher. Our visual arts program is visible in student work displayed throughout the school.

A focus on Athletics: We have many sports teams for students to join both intermural and competative teams who compete against other schools, in the area and in the YRDSB region.  Students are required to be active participants in our school athletics classes and programs.  Health and wellness is a focus at the school for our staff and students.

A focus on Technology: Integration of computers into curriculum delivery and classroom programming is happening throughout the school.  We encourage students to use technology as a tool to further their learning and to explore a wealth of information quickly and critically.  The YRDSB Acceptable Use of Tchnology Policy is to be followed at all times. This includes cell phones and personal technology items.

Assessment and Evaluation: At Armitage Village we utilize a variety of Assessment and Evaluation strategies including learning activities using the levels 1 to 4 of the Ontario Curriculum and the YRDSB Guidelines for Assessment and Evaluation. Parents, students and teachers use the language of the level descriptors and see level 3 as meeting the Ministry Curriculum expectation. Classroom work is assessed and evaluated utilizing a variety of strategies reflecting current knowledge. Rubrics are used across the curriculum where applicable. Each year the staff provides parent information nights that seek to increase parent and student understanding of the assessment and evaluation language and strategies used.

Safe and Supportive Schools/Character Education/Equity Education
Every student has the right to learn in a safe and supportive environment. The York Region District School Board has a Safe Schools Policy and a defined procedure to implement the policy. Both the policy and procedure support the view that student discipline involves a continuum of support including prevention, intervention and appropriate consequences. The YRDSB remains committed to the inclusion of anti-racist and equity education in its policies and programs.
Safe Schools initiatives that are very important at Armitage Village P.S. include:
  • Bullying PreventionPrograms
  • Informal social skills counseling
In addition, Armitage Village P.S. supports the development of character education in the York Region District School Board.
