Message to our students and
families
I would like to make a brief
introduction to our wonderful community.
I joined Dr. J.M. Denison Secondary School at the beginning of February,
as the prior Principal, Ms. J. Atkinson finalized her work prior to retiring
this semester. I was very excited to learn of my appointment to a school that
has been a pivotal institution to support students in the Newmarket community
since 1989. Coincidentally, this date is
also aligned to when I began teaching in Ontario and only a few years earlier
than our family move to this area. I feel
honoured to be have been appointed to a school with such deep roots in the
community and an exceptional history of providing for student success,
excellence in teaching staff and community engagement.
As you know, our school is
named after a local physician, who served the Newmarket community in the health
care field and worked with the teenagers of that time. It was with sadness we have recently learned
of the passing of his wife Richenda Denison, and our thoughts go to their
family.
I have been fortunate to have worked in
education with York Region District School Board for many years. I opened Westmount Collegiate Institute as
the Head of Science and subsequently filled a similar role at Dr. G.W. Williams
prior to becoming an administrator. As
a Vice Principal, I had assignments at Markville Secondary School, Sutton
District High School, Westmount Collegiate Institute and Middlefield
Collegiate. As a Principal I supported
Bayview Secondary School and just recently Milliken Mills High School. In each of these settings, I learned that
students have a range of strengths allowing them to aspire to any post-secondary
opportunity and make our families and staff proud of their
accomplishments. I look forward to
learning with each of our students in the months and years ahead, meeting you,
their families, and connecting with the broader Newmarket community to continue
the great work of our staff and alumni from Denison.
As we begin our
educational journey together, I trust that we will form a strong collaboration
which will support your children to become lifelong learners ready to support
themselves and their community into the future. In partnership with the staff at Denison, we
will collectively provide instruction and programming that is challenging,
engaging and varied to meet the needs of our children’s education and ensure
they feel they belong to the school.
Sincerely,
Mr. Alex Corry
The proud new
Principal of Dr. J.M. Denison Secondary School.
