Literacy is the ability to use language and images in rich and varied forms
to read, write, listen, view, represent, discuss, and think critically about ideas.
Literacy enables us to share information and to interact with others.
(Paying Attention to Literacy) Adolescent literacy is particularly important
because literacy demands such as vocabulary acquisition, accessing and managing
information become more complex across subjects and disciplines. Also,
the diversity and broad range of development of learners in Grades 7 -12 has an
impact on their literacy skills. (Student Achievement: Literacy Planning
Resource)
Literacy involves:
- Thinking analytically
- Accessing, managing, creating and evaluating
information
- Communicating thoughts and ideas
effectively
- Applying metacognitive skills and knowledge
- Developing an interest in life-long learning
