Welcome Message from Administration

Welcome to HG Bernard, home to some of the most dedicated, hard working students in York Region. Our staff members are committed professionals who establish safe, caring, welcoming classroom environments that engage and inspire children to develop to the best of their potential. At Bernard we strive for both academic excellence and social responsibility. Gone are the days when rote learning and memorization will support our children to meet with success. The changing world of today demands that our children become critical thinkers who can analyze the large quantity of information thrust upon them daily. They must understand bias, perspective and be critical consumers of this information found at their finger tips. Our students must be technologically savvy, and understand both the responsibilities and privileges that technology offers. Our students must be effective problem solvers, unfazed by the array of issues facing our world. Our children will be the ones who protect our environment, build workplaces that demonstrate respect for diversity, embrace equity and achieve truly inclusive environments where each individual is a valued, contributing member of the community.

At HG Bernard we are committed to developing students who:
  • Believe in a Growth Mindset and know that through hard work and perseverance they can achieve their goals
  • Demonstrate a love of learning, and are interested in, and excited about, the world around them
  • Collaborate with others, and are able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and engage in purposeful talk.  Purposeful talk is coming to an intellectual exchange willing to see and hear something new in the exchange, and actually creating a newer, stronger understanding because of the exchange. (Comprehension Through Conversation. Maria Nichols)
  • Think and act like ‘mathematicians’, enjoy problem solving, believe they are good mathematicians and demonstrate fluency and flexibility with number
  • Critically analyze a variety of text forms in order to gain an understanding of the world, and evaluate for potential bias
  • Demonstrate kindness, optimism, perseverance, compassion for others, gratitude, self-control, zest and grit.
