Safe and Supportive Schools/Character Education/Equity Education
Every student has the right to learn in a safe and supportive environment. The York Region District School Board has a Safe Schools Policy and a defined procedure to implement the policy. Both the policy and procedure support the view that student discipline involves a continuum of support including prevention, intervention and appropriate consequences. The YRDSB remains committed to the inclusion of anti-racist and equity education in its policies and programs.
In addition, Lake Simcoe P.S. supports the development of character education in the York Region District School Board. The following is an overview of the school's Character Education initiatives:
  • A school points program based on the Learning Skills section of the report card.
  • A PASS room based on a problem-solving model to teach student to Plan Satisfactory Solutions to foster development of their interpersonal relationships.
  • An after-school learning skills program where students can receive one to one counseling and help with their homework and test-taking skills.
  • An INSIGHT (Intensive Support in Guidance, Help and Training to support high risk students
Daily announcements to foster values and ethics are shared by the homeroom teachers and often become a focus for discussion and writing.
