Exploring Family Studies  -  HIF1O1
This course explores, within the context of families, some of the fundamental challenges people face: how to meet basic needs, how to relate to others, how to manage resources, and how to become responsible members of society. Students will explore adolescent development and will have opportunities to develop interpersonal, decision-making, and practical skills related to daily life. They will learn about the diverse ways in which families function in Canada and will use research skills as they explore topics related to adolescent psychology, understanding mental health and managing resources such as time and money.

Exploring Family Studies - ESL  -  HIF1OL
This course explores the challenges faced by all people: how to meet basic needs, how to relate to others, how to manage resources, and how to become responsible members of society. Students will acquire knowledge and skills that are needed to make the transition to adulthood. Teachers will instruct students in developing interpersonal, decision-making, and practical skills related to daily life. Students will explore the functioning of families and the diversities found among families and within society. In addition, students will work towards building reading comprehension skills and vocabulary development.

Food and Nutrition  -  HFN2O1
This course focuses on food preparation and healthy eating. Students will explore the factors that affect attitudes and decisions about food and examine current issues of body image and food marketing. The course provides many opportunities to practice food preparations skills.

Food and Culture  -  HFC3M1
This course focuses on the flavors, aromas, cooking techniques, foods, and cultural traditions of world cuisines. Students will explore the origins of and developments in diverse food traditions. They will demonstrate the ability to cook with ingredients and equipment from a variety of cultures, compare food-related etiquette in many countries and cultures, and explain how Canadian food choices and traditions have been influenced by other cultures. Students will develop practical skills and apply social science research methods while investigating foods and food practices from around the world.

Fashion, Media and Culture  -  HNC3C1
This course explores what clothing communicates about the wearer and how it becomes a creative and entrepreneurial outlet through the design and production processes. Students will learn, through practical experiences, about the nature of fashion design; the characteristics of fibers and fabrics and the construction, production, and marketing of clothing. Students will develop research skills as they explore the psychology.

Child Psychology  -  HPC3O1
This course focuses on the skills and knowledge needed to promote the positive and healthy nurturing of children, with particular emphasis on the critical importance of the early years to human development. Students will learn how to meet the developmental needs of young children, communicate and discipline effectively and guide early behavior. Students can choose the opportunity to practice infant care skills with the infant care simulator. Students will have the opportunity to participate in High Five training which is a certification that is recognized by summer camps, lifeguarding and other work with children.
COURSE NOTE: The "Real Care Infant Simulator" can be selected but is not a mandatory assignment.

Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology, and Sociology  -  HSP3U1
This course introduces the theories, questions, and issues that are the major concerns of anthropology, psychology, and sociology. Students will develop an understanding of the way social scientists approach the topics they study and the research methods they employ. Students will be given opportunities to explore theories from a variety of perspectives and to become familiar with current thinking on a range of issues that have captured the interest of classical and contemporary social scientists in the three disciplines.

Nutrition and Health  -  HFA4C1
This course focuses on the relationship between nutrition and health at different stages of life and on global issues related to food production. Students will investigate the role of nutrition in health and disease and assess strategies for promoting food security and environmental responsibility. Students will learn about healthy eating, expand their repertoire of food-preparation techniques, and refine their ability to use social science research and inquiry methods to investigate topics related to nutrition and health.

This course examines various nutritional, psychological, social, cultural, and global factors that influence people’s food choices and customs. Students will learn about current Canadian and worldwide issues related to food, frameworks for making appropriate dietary choices, and food-preparation techniques. This course also refines students’ skills used in researching and investigating issues related to food and nutrition.

Managing Personal Resources  -  HIP4O1
This course prepares students for living independently and working successfully with others. Students will learn to manage their personal resources (including talent, money, and time), to develop interpersonal skills, and to understand economic influences on workplace issues, in order to make wise and responsible personal and occupational choices. The course emphasizes the achievement of expectations through practical experiences and introduces students to skills used in researching and investigating resource management.

Fashion, Globalization and Ethics  -  HNB4M1
This course gives students the opportunity to explore the world of fashion. Students will learn how to create fashion products using various tools, techniques and technologies while developing their practical skills. Students will learn about the various factors that affect the global fashion industry, and the impact of fiber and fabric production and care. In addition, they will learn about social and historical influences on fashion. Students will apply research skills when investigating aspects of the fashion world. No sewing experience is required.

Challenge and Change in Society  -  HSB4U1
This course uses social science theories and perspectives to investigate and explain shifts in knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and behavior and their impact on society. Students will critically analyze how and why cultural, social and behavioral patterns change over time. Some of the challenges that are explored in this course are the effects of technology, deviance and global inequalities.
