Attendance Information
Students are expected to attend all of their classes every day.
Students of compulsory school age (under 18 years) who do not attend regularly, are reported to the Board Attendance Counsellor/Social Worker, so that the reason for their absence can be determined and appropriate counselling can be initiated. Students of all ages who do not attend regularly will be interviewed by the Vice-Principal and may be subject to consequences.
Students Aged 18 or Over
Students who are 18 or over must report their absence to the Main Office by calling 905-889-6266 the morning of the absence. Students who are 18 or over cannot validate their absence after the fact.
Reporting an Absence
Parents/guardians are requested to call the school at 905-889-6266, and press 1 when requested, as early as possible prior to any day their son/daughter will be absent from class.
At the end of the school day, our automated phone system will notify the home of each student who is absent from or late for a class. Parents/guardians are expected to contact the school and to notify us of the reason for the absence every time a phone call is received.
Returning from an Absence
Upon returning to school, unless there has been parental validation of the absence, students must go to the main office with a note for the school administration indicating the reason for the absence.
Notes must include the following: student name, student I.D. # (where possible), date and reason for absence, and the parent/guardian’s signature.
Official medical notes may be required when a student misses a significant form of evaluation.
Acceptable reasons for student absences from class include:
illness
religious observances as identified in the Board’s Multifaith calendar
authorized school activity
special circumstances approved in advance by the Principal
An absence validation slip will be issued to the student by the attendance secretary when a note is received. The student must show the slip to all of his/her teachers.
It is the responsibility of the student to make up all work missed.
When students sign in, they are expected to go to class immediately.
Lates
All students are expected to be in their Period 1 class by 8:25 a.m. Students who arrive to class after the national anthem are considered to be late. Students are expected to be on time for their Period 2, 3 and 4 classes as per their timetable.
Leaving School Early / Signing Out
If a student must leave school early, a note signed by a parent/guardian must be brought to the Main Office before leaving.
The note must include the following information:
student name
student I.D. # (where possible)
current date
reason for leaving early
time the student must leave
how the student is getting home
If a student fails to bring a note, the Main Office will contact the parent/guardian to obtain permission for the student to be excused. In case of illness during the day, the Main Office will contact a parent/guardian and obtain permission for the student to go home. If contact cannot be made, the student will be asked to remain in the office.
Illness During the School Day
If you become ill during the school day, you must go to the Main Office so that you can be monitored. Your parent/guradian will be contacted for instructions. You must remain in the Main Office until you are able to return to class or until the school has your parent's permission to allow you to leave the school.
Extended Absence (Vacation or Lengthy Illness)
Students who will be absent for three or more days at the request of the parent must complete a “Planned Absence” form which is available at the Main Office. The form must be completed by the student, reviewed by the student's teachers, signed by the parent/guardian and returned to the Vice Principal prior to the absence.
Students who are away due to extended illness should contact the Main Office and each of their teachers at the time of the illness.
