Our School
Markville Secondary School cultivates students of moral character who are dedicated to excellence through all aspects of school and community life.  Markville Secondary School is a semestered school with a population of approximately 1300 students. It is located in the culturally diverse community of Markham, Ontario.  Markville Secondary School is part of the York Region District School Board, a world-renowned leader in progressive educational initiatives. 
 
Academic Program 
Markville Secondary School is highly academic, offering a wide range of courses to meet the needs of all students. In addition, we offer a Gifted and an expanding Advanced Placement program. Markville always scores extremely well on all provincial testing. Most notably, our
 
2011-2012 grade 9 academic math and 2012-2013 grade 10 literacy student scores ranked number one throughout York Region District School Board. Markville Secondary School's dedication to excellence is further illustrated through our student AP Exam results.  Our students’ consistently rank well above the provincial, national and global averages.
 
We also offer a wide range of programs to promote the success of all students including an extensive selection of ESL courses for our English language learners, an exceptional Student Services team, Personalized Alternative Education programming, and a strong and supportive Student Success network.  Students who would like to explore specific program areas in an
in-depth level can do so through one of our five Specialist High Skills Major programs including:  Business, Information and Communication Technology, Health and Wellness, Arts and Culture, and Environment.  
 
1:1 Program
In the 2013-14 school year, Markville Secondary School started a unique student technology program that required all incoming grade 9's to bring in their own wifi enabled technological device to use in class.  In August 2016, all of students will take part in this program.  Our goal is to continue to provide an environment that allows students to move from being consumers of technology to creators with technology. 
 
Our Graduates
Approximately 80% of our graduating class attend university programs, with a significant number of our graduating students achieving the distinction of Ontario Scholar.  The distinction is given to students who maintain an average mark of at least 80% in their senior year of high school. Markville Secondary School graduates regularly go on to attend world class universities and colleges. Many of our students receive scholarships each year including prestigious national awards.
 
Extra- and Co-curricular Opportunities 
Markville Secondary School offers a multitude of extra- and co-curricular opportunities for students through its wide variety of clubs, sports and organizations. The enthusiasm and initiative demonstrated by our teachers and student body is exemplary. As a result, our clubs and teams excel in a wide variety of activities including: art exhibitions, athletics, anti-racism campaigns, DECA, Model United Nations, drama productions, environmental initiatives, mathematics, music, science competitions, global citizenship activities and a school newspaper to list just a few.
 
The Music Department at Markville Secondary School consistently ranks amongst the top in all music competitions.  Furthermore, students participate in a variety of high level academic competitions scoring at or near the top provincially.  Markville Secondary School also emphasizes the importance of bringing curriculum to life outside the classroom through a multitude of international travel opportunities and an extensive Co-operative Education Program to enrich learning.

Markville Secondary School believes in the importance of a balanced lifestyle for our students and staff.  We promote a holistic approach to education that combines academics, extra-curricular involvement, and a commitment to healthy active living fostering the development of a well adjusted individual.  Through Markville’s “Dedication to Excellence” our students are prepared for active participation in our changing global community.
