In Music, students will not only find a source of enjoyment and personal satisfaction, but will further develop critical and creative thinking skills, problem-solving skills, and good work habits. They will continue to gain experience in working both independently and with others, take increasing responsibility for their work, and learn more about themselves and others through cooperative learning and the study of music in society. Students will also participate in various ensembles throughout the course of their study, as part of Music Repertoire credit courses.
The Music Department emphasizes the creation and performance of Instrumental and Vocal Music at all different levels. Students will develop musical literacy skills by using the creative and critical analysis processes in performance, composition and a range of reflective and analytical activities. Students will find a source of personal enjoyment and community while developing their understanding of musical conventions, practices, and terminology. They will also explore the function of music in society with reference to the self, communities, and cultures. All students are also encouraged to take the Repertoire course conducted outside of regular school hours to further enhance performance skills. The Repertoire course forms the foundation of all MMHS Music Department Ensembles: Grade 9 Concert Band, Grade 10 Symphonic Band, Grade 11/12 Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Choir and Small Ensembles.
