What is the High Performance Athlete | HPA Program?

A specialized, cooperative education program, for students who are competing at the provincial, national and/or international level. In HPA, students practice and demonstrate, through a cooperative education program, the knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom, to their training/competition setting.

HPA Athletes at Richmond Green currently train in the following sports:

 Skating - Judo - Golf - Gymnastics - Dance - Squash - Water Polo
We encourage athletes in other sports to apply.

A student may earn one HPA credit per semester, two credits in total for the school year. There is no limit to the number of HPA credits a student can earn through cooperative education (Co-op) programming as long as you have a related course to link the Co-op to.

HPA co-op is the same as any other curriculum course:

  • HPA can be taken for either one semester or a full year; for 1 period, the period will depend on when your student trains. For example: our golfers train at the end of the day so their HPA period is period four, our last class of the day.
  • it has curriculum expectations;
  • work is assessed by the Co-op teacher and the placement supervisor (in this case the coach or trainer);
  • it meets the requirements for an OSSD and/or SHSM diploma

Who is it for? Guidelines for consideration

HPA is co-op programming tailored to meet the learning needs of students who are committed to focusing on their long term career objectives while accommodating competitive training needs.

Students must be competing regularly at a Provincial, National and International level.  Have a full-time certified Coach. Train with your coach at their facility atleast 15 hours per week, Monday-Friday.

To access HPA programming students must complete the Coaches reference
formz_HPACoachsReferenceform.pdfz_HPACoachsReferenceform.pdf and have an interview with the HPA teacher. Once the Coaches Reference is complete, email the form to: jill.kinsella@yrdsb.ca

Ms. Kinsella will contact you for an interview.

What are the benefits of our HPA programming?

 HPA programming provides students with an opportunity to:

  • create a timetable that is flexible for their training needs
  • work with Guidance to access additional learning opportunities if required ie: e-learning, ILC's
  • participate on Richmond Green school teams
  • complete HPA course work that is related to the individual and their sport
  • earn credits towards their OSSD while training and competing.
