Traditional Art: Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 Visual Arts, Grade 11 and 12 Painting, Grade 12 Visual Design
These courses are exploratory in nature, offering an overview of Visual Arts as a foundation for further study. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design, and expressive qualities of various materials by using a range of media, processes, techniques, and styles. Students will use the creative and critical analysis process and will interpret art within a personal, contemporary and historical context.
In traditional courses students explore painting (acrylic, watercolour), drawing (graphite, charcoal, pen and ink, coloured pencil, pastels), sculpture (clay, found object, papier-mâché), and printmaking (relief carving, mono-printing, screen printing, intaglio). An emphasis is placed on the art research journal or sketchbook where ideas are planned and developed and information is gathered. Grade 9 and 11 are available in French instruction.
Media Arts: Grade 10, 11 and 12
These courses enable students to create art works incorporating materials, practices, tools, and skills from a variety of arts disciplines. Students will review elements from the traditional arts in combination with the elements and principles of Media Arts (hybridization, interactivity, duration, and point of view).
The technologies and processes used to create media art may include photography, film/video/television, photocopy art, sound elements, animation created by computer software, sculpture, and multimedia production.
Digital Photography: Grades 11 and 12
These courses further refine students’ abilities to use the photographic medium to express ideas, change meaning through context, and further their understanding of visual culture. Students will gain an understanding of photographic movements, historical and contemporary photographers, and how to use a digital camera and a digital darkroom.
* In photography it is useful to have access to a personal digital camera. Photo editing software, computers and printers are all provided within the classroom.
