English Department 414
English Department
The English program at Westmount C.I. has been designed to develop the oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy skills along with the critical and creative thinking skills that students need for success in their secondary school academic programs and in their daily lives. Students will analyze literary texts from contemporary and historical periods, interpret informational and graphic texts, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms.

The focus of our English courses at Westmount will include the following:
  • Using academic language coherently and confidently
  • Selecting the reading strategies best suited to particular texts and particular purposes for reading
  • Analyzing texts for meaning and connections
  • Developing greater control in writing
  • Fostering a lifelong appreciation for literature and language
The English department now offers a wide range of creative writing extra-curricular activities and clubs including Spoken Word, Writers' Guild, debating club, writing conferences and field trips. Students from every grade bond over their shared love of literature. All students are welcome.

At Westmount we offer a full range of English courses. Besides academic and applied offerings in each grade, the mandatory courses for acceptance to college and university, we also have many optional courses such as media studies, creative writing, sports in literature, and a literature-intensive course in grade 12. Students who excel at English are eligible to take AP English in both grade 11 and 12.
