The Westmount Geography Department provides students with
a practical, problem-solving approach to investigate and analyze both the local
and global issues facing our world today.
We believe that Geography involves an integration of both
the physical and social sciences, and as such our approach to education is
cross curricular, scaffolding knowledge with specific skills and techniques
useful in the varying educational and career path our students select.
Throughout our program, students are given opportunities
to learn through a wide range of practical experiences, including community
involvement, guest speakers and out of school activities. Emphasis in each
course is placed on the development of the varying skills (e.g., research,
report writing, interviewing techniques, data base and computer simulations and
the creative thinking skills) needed in active problem solving and the decision
making process.
Every effort is made to provide an inclusive and adaptable
learning environment that meets the needs of each student regardless of their
level of achievement and individual academic background. In working towards the
production of a literate graduate, our course evaluations focus on a wide range
of techniques including article, reports, essays, model creation, graphic
analysis, oral presentations, seminars and anecdotal records, cumulative files
of student work, tests, and individual and group projects.
