English Help Room
The English department offers an English extra help room after school from 3:20-4:00pm in room 222 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This room is intended for students to bring in their work for editing or for students who would like clarification and assistance with their English homework.
Writing Contests
Annual essay contests on Ayn Rand's Novels.
Anthem essay contest for 8th, 9th, and 10th graders. Entry Dealine March 20, 2014. Essay must be between 7600 and 1200 words in length.
- The Fountainhead essay contest for 11th and 12th graders. Entry deadline April 26, 2014. Essay must ne between 800 and 1600 words in length.
- Atlas Shrugged essay contest for 12th graders. Entry deadline October 24, 2014. Essay must be between 800 and 1600 words in length.
Stephen Leacock Student Humorous Short Story Competition 2014
- Entry to this contest is limited to students of Ontario Seconday Schools, public and private
- Entry will be a humorous story or humorous personal essay
- Maximum length: 1500 words
- Entry must have a title and be typed, double spaced on one side of the page only
- Pages must be numbered, but no other identifying marks may appear on them
- A cover page must be included and must list the title of the submission, the name of the student, the name of the school attended, its phone number and email address
- Three copies of each entry, plus the entry fee, must be mailed to Marilyn Rumball, Contest Registrar, 24 Whistler Place, RR2, Coldwater, Ontario, L0K 1E0. The fee is $5.00 per entry.
- Entries may be made any time after November 1, 2013 but must be postmarked no later than March 8, 2014. The winners will be announced by May 15, 2014.
- The cash award for this year's contest is $1,000. The winner will receive two tickets to the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal Banquet held at the Geneva Park Conference Centre in June, accommodation for two nights, an autographed copy of the medal-winning book, and all winners will be honoured at a soiree at the Stephen Leacock Home, Old Brewery Bay, the Friday before the Award Banquet.
- The second place winner will receive $700; the third place $300. Both are invited to attend the Friday evening soiree.
