A Word from the Head

On behalf of the music department, I would like to welcome you to the busiest department at Bayview Secondary School. By the end of the school year, music students at Bayview will have participated in over 50 events including concerts, camps, competitions, festivals, and tours. While you won't personally be involved with all of these events, I encourage you to become involved with as many as you can. Some of our new students will only wish to attend classes and learn a little bit about music. Others will learn that their involvement with the music department could be a defining moment in their lives. I certainly hope that you investigate the second path. It may be the best decision you've ever made.

Sincerely,
Mr. Dan Horner

Department Head of Music

Our Staff

The staff at our department are some of the most dedicated music teachers and directors in the region. Here are some short biographies of our beloved music teachers at Bayview Secondary School.

Mr. Horner

B.Mus, B.Ed.
Head of Department

Mr. Horner grew up in North York where he attended Sir John A. Macdonald Collegiate Institute. During high school, he studied trumpet privately with Vince Gassi and was a very active member of his school's Music Department. Later, at Queen's University, Mr. Horner performed with several ensembles, including the Wind Ensemble, the Jazz Ensemble, the Symphony Orchestra, and the Queen's Music Theatre Orchestra. He also spent some time as a research assistant, the assistant conductor of the Queen's Symphony Orchestra, as well as performing with the Kingston Symphony Orchestra on occasion.

Since graduating from the Faculty of Education at Queen's University, Mr. Horner has taught at Glen Cedar P.S., Sutton P.S., and Aurora High School. In 2001, Mr. Horner became the Head of Music at Bayview Secondary School.

Away from school, Mr. Horner is the director of the TYWO Symphonic Winds which is the training ensemble for the prestigious Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra.  This organization has performed at Carnegie Hall and has performed with well known performers such as The United States Marines Herald Trumpets, trumpeters Jens Lindemann and Allen Vizzuti and the Canadian Brass.  Mr. Horner has also taught at the University of Toronto and is a member of the staff at the Carleton campus of Shad Valley.

Mr. Racine

B.Mus, B.Ed.
Instrumental Teacher & Jazz Conductor

Mr. Racine studied jazz at Humber College and that 'legit' stuff at the University of Toronto. After going on the road for a while, he realized how much he missed teaching, so he returned to U of T, got a B.Mus. Ed., and taught at Unionville HS for the next 16 years. Now he teaches jazz and guitar, and coaches rugby.

Ms. Fong

B.Mus, B.Ed.
Vocal & Piano Teacher

Ms. Fong majored in voice at the University of Toronto where she acquired her B. Mus. She has also completed her ARCTs in piano performance and piano teaching from the Royal Conservatory of Music. Her performance credits include: ensemble and understudy to Lady Thiang at Straford Festival's production of "The King and I", ensemble in Tapesty New Opera's "Iron Road", as well as various guest appearances for Fairchild Television. In addition, she performed as the lead vocalist with the Toronto Chinese pop group, Carry On. She has taught voice, piano and theory privately for several years and completed a B.Ed at York University before coming to teach at Bayview Secondary School.
