Fine Art And Design
Bayview Secondary School Visual Art Department has been offering courses in art and design for over 50 years. Our department offers a variety of courses beyond the Comprehensive Art courses AVI 10, AVI 20, AVI 3M and AVI 4M. Students may choose additional courses from the following:
Photography AWQ 20, AWQ 30, AWQ 4M
Design IDC 4U
Craft AWA 20, AWA 30
Drawing AWL 20
Sculpture AWP 20
The focus of our department is to prepare students with the practical and theoretical foundation to be successful in post-secondary studies. Students are taught to approach their practice in fine art and design from a conceptual, critical thinking and problem-solving model. Those students who do not have the prerequisite for a course may present a portfolio of previous work in order for the prerequisite to be waived.
Bayview Fine Art and Design graduates will be able to defend their work by communicating a sense of personal identity, self-confidence, self-awareness and well-being. We embed in our class discussions, field trips, guest visits and career path investigations a thirst for art and possible pathways in arts based careers. To this end we welcome our students to meet with our staff to discuss and critique their portfolio and post-secondary interests as early and as often as they wish.
Students are invited to showcase their work outside of the classroom environment. This is not limited to the Cambell Gallery and the school hallways, but can include competition and exhibition opportunities within the greater community. Participation in the Art Club, Photography Club and Film Club provides another outlet for informal student-led activities and leadership.
Students who have successfully completed four Visual Arts courses at Bayview may apply for one of the three Art Achievement Awards. These awards were designed to celebrate the passion and commitment of students that have embraced fine art.
