Notes on Translation
The electronic translation service on the York Region District School Board's website is hosted by Google Translate. The quality of the translation will vary in some of the languages offered by Google. Google Translate is a free service and currently offers translation in over 50 languages, although an impressive number, this does not capture all languages or dialects. The basic translation’s goal is to capture the general intention of the original English material.
The York Region District School Board does not guarantee the quality, accuracy or completeness of any translated information. Before you act on translated information, the Board encourages you to confirm any facts that are important to you and affect any decisions you may make.
The York Region District School Board is committed to parent, family and community engagement, and it is our hope that by providing this tool on our website that we are making our information more accessible to families whose first language is not English and thereby enabling better engagement in public education.

When the population of the Buttonville area grew large enough to need its own school again, a new Buttonville P.S. was built. Although the building looks very different, life for students is not so different from the 1800s. Most students still walk to school and Buttonville P.S. is once again a vibrant community school.
Buttonville P.S. was the first school in York Region to adopt the co-operate teaching philosophy of learning through group participation (Tribes). This has meant that the school has led many school-wide collaborative projects including: large musical productions and cultural events that reflect the diversity of the school community.Buttonville Quilt
One of the first Tribes projects was the Buttonville quilt. Created by staff and the community, it included the names of all of the first families to attend the school. It still hangs in the library today.

Terry Fox DonationIn 2013, Buttonville students raised $10 000 for the Terry Fox Foundation in just three weeks!! Terry Fox’s brother, Fred Fox came to the school to thank all 550 students for their achievement.
“Terry might not have been the biggest, strongest, fastest or even the smartest, but with hard work and determination he realized he could accomplish most things he set his mind to. Terry was taught to finish what he started, didn’t matter what it was.”
-Fred Fox

Pachi the Porcupine
Once again the school pulled together to compete in the Toronto 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games mascot contest. Working in groups of 2-6, students entered 45 submissions! Out of over 4 000 submissions from across Canada, Pachi the Porcupine, created by Jenny Lee, Fiona Hong, Michelle Ing and Paige Kunihiro, won. Buttonville staff enthusiastically supported the contestants by encouraging students, staff and family to vote. Some votes came from as far away as Australia and the UK!
