1)      Welcome & Acceptance of Current Agenda (Amanda)

-all were in favour of the agenda

                                               

2)      Acceptance of September Meeting Minutes (Amanda)

-Chris accepted the minutes and Katherine seconded the motion

 

 

3)      Committee Updates:

a)      Fundraising Update and Voting of Events

-fundraisers include gingerbread houses, spirit wear, dance-a-thon, fun fair and silent

auction, second lunch meal, freezie Fridays, hot chocolate

 

-Mother’s Deli can provide lunch meals weekly; they will drop off meals and give lunches by

class, labelled with names

-lunch helpers can assist with delivering lunches to classes

-it will cost about $3.50 for the meal and council will set the price at $5.00 for fundraising

 (doesn’t include a drink or snack)

-this can be paid for on School Cash Online

-will do a first round of 5 or 6 weeks of meals from Mother’s Deli beginning in November on

Fridays

 

-QSP cookie dough would be delivered to the school

-the tubs are heavy and students probably won’t be able to carry them home

-there is a 3 week turnaround from ordering to delivery

-it was decided that this fundraiser may be difficult and therefore, the council will not

 pursue this fundraiser

 

-council decided not to do QSP magazines this year

 

-license for watching movies is $500

-Scott will purchase license for movies if a sponsor cannot be found

-will have 3 movies nights/ lunches

-discussion about sponsorship for the license if it is a parent run event; Chris N. will explore

sponsorship

 

-will have different ‘a-thon’s’ for students to choose from including the dance-a thon

 

-discussed adding a fundraiser of selling hot chocolate

-explore if Starbucks or Tim Hortons can donate the drinks and cups

 

-the school will write and send out the Invest In School letter; will be sent out next week

 

-$1500 of spirit wear has been sold (prior to paying for the cost of the shirts)

-there will be a second round of spirit wear sales later this year

 

b)      Parent Engagement

-this committee did not meet

-Haafid will be the chair of this committee

 

c)       Healthy Schools

-this committee did not meet

-Marie will be the chair for this committee

-play leaders have signed up

-will explore other activities to promote positive mental health

-leadership team will assist with assisting to promote inclusivity

 

4)      Treasurer’s Report (Kelly)

-funds for technology have not been used yet as the cost sharing program has been postponed

 

5)      Update From School (Scott/ Vivianne)

-36 students signed up for Mad Science

-Arts Express will be coming back to do a program

-How Cool Is That science guy will be coming back to do a program

 

-‘go outside day’ is October 24th; possibly have council make hot chocolate that morning

 

-Bags To School will take place; discussed dedicating a day to have parents be able to bring

textiles for recycling during the morning kiss n’ ride

 

-there will be a spirit day (anti-bullying and promotion of LGBTQ)

-discussion about having a Cornell school spirit day (wearing spirit wear or school colours)

 

-Scott showed a presentation; school motto is “We are a village growing together”

-EQAO scores were presented and scores help to shape schools direction

-EQAO has a site linked with the school results

-Scott reviewed factors that affect the scores

-reviewed gender differences in scores

 

-school is focusing on engaging males more in learning and activities

-also focus on helping males to make better choices and possibly improve mental health

 

-The Board will be sending out a survey in November called “Every Student Counts”

 

-the Board collects data to learn of trends in the schools

-students in grades 5 to 8 are asked questions about the school to determine the school climate

-examples of questions include: Do I feel supported by my teachers? Do I feel welcome? Do I

feel safe?

 

-the survey that was sent out to parents about ways to become a more welcoming school

included feedback about ensuring students are feeling welcomed by their teachers, having

communication from teachers, etc.

-not many responded to the survey

 

-the board will be introducing an improved tool to collect data which will assist with observing trends

-the school is committed to continuing to train teachers in the comprehensive math program

 

-there is a new assembly structure

-exploring ways to bring more character and inclusivity

-promoting global citizenship (humanitarianism, kindness, etc)

-focusing on initiatives that are fun and creating a sense of belonging

 

-school is promoting heritage months so students can learn about other cultures

-discussion took place about how to create a new inclusive space

 

6)     Motion to Adjourn (Amanda)

-Kelly accepted motion to adjourn, Haafid seconded the motion
