Principal's Message

Welcome to Jersey PS. Our staff and students are working to create a dynamic school environment that is warm, welcoming and inclusive.  Our staff understand the importance of every child having a sense of belonging, and we invite parents to be our partners in their child’s education. We are committed to developing well rounded students who think critically, are effective problem solvers and, most important, who are good citizens – kind to their peers, respectful of those around them, able to stand up for what is right and who understand their responsibilities in a democratic environment. Students at Jersey are learning to advocate for themselves and show a willingness to help one another grow and learn. They pride themselves on their achievements, understand that success comes through hard work, and are committed to the goals they have set out for themselves.

We are focused on supporting our students in the areas of Literacy and Mathematics through an equity and anti-oppressive lens. This means we take our time to know our learners, meet them where they are at and support them through differentied instructional apporoaches which includes the use of culturally relevant and responsive resources and materials.

Teachers continue to develop their pedagogical expertise and structure their lessons using a 'low floor/high ceiling' approach. This ensures that all our students have multiple entry points into the learning. This fosters student engagement, student confidence and student success. Many of our teachers have become skilled facilitators of student learning ensuring tasks are meaningful and engaging, and students are expected to actively participate in their learning.

We pride ourselves on building a school community that not only supports our student's academic achievements, but focuses on the 'whole child', paying special attention to those opportunities that enhance the school experience, spark passion and help build self-confidence in all our learners. Our hope is that these experiences will help our students find their interests, strengths and passion which they can continue with in high school, post-secondary and beyond.

Our school is made up of approximately 240 K – 8 students which is likely to grow as the Georgina community develops in the near future.  Our school includes an EarlyOn Learning Centre which is open to all Georgina parents of pre JK students on a drop in basis 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday.  We also host the Jericho Before and After School program which helps to provide a seamless transition for students at the beginning and end of the school day.

At Jersey P.S., we are proud to make connections with many of our community partners.  We are a Performance Plus school so with grants provided to us through Breakfast for Learning, we are able to provide a breakfast and snack program for all students who wish to participate.   We have also partnered with the Food Network of York Region and offer a Food Pantry for our families to access on a Bi-Weekly basis.

We are proud of our school and are honoured to be part of our student's lives.

Ms. Heather Deckert Principal Jersey P.S.
