Principal's Message

Welcome to Jersey PS. Our staff and students are working to create a dynamic school environment that is warm, welcoming and inclusive.  Our staff understand the importance of every child having a sense of belonging, and we invite parents to be our partners in their child’s education. We are committed to developing well rounded students who think critically, are effective problem solvers and, most important, who are good citizens – kind to their peers, respectful of those around them, able to stand up for what is right and who understand their responsibilities in a democratic environment. Students at Jersey are learning to advocate for themselves and show a willingness to help one another grow and learn. They pride themselves on their achievements, understand that success comes through hard work, and are committed to the goals they have set out for themselves.

Mathematics and inquiry continue to be a school focus and are central to our School Improvement Plan. Teachers continue to develop their pedagogical expertise and structure their math block around the components of a ‘comprehensive math program’. The components include teaching through problem solving and using mini-lessons to develop number sense. Many of our teachers have become skilled facilitators of student learning ensuring tasks are meaningful and engaging, and students are expected to actively participate in their learning.

Developing strong literacy skills is also a focus. Students are supported to develop critical thinking skills and be critical consumers of various text forms. Perhaps most important we are developing the necessary learning skills and Mindsets in our students so that they can persevere with challenging tasks and overcome obstacles.

Our school is made up of approximately 310 K – 8 students which is likely to grow as the Georgina community develops in the near future.  Our school includes a Parent and Family Literacy Centre which is open to all Georgina parents of pre JK students on a drop in basis 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday.  We also host the Kinark Before and After School program which helps to provide a seamless transition for students at the beginning and end of the school day.

At Jersey P.S., we are proud to make connections with many of our community partners.  We are a Performance Plus school so with grants provided to us through Breakfast for Learning, we are able to provide a breakfast and snack program for all students who wish to participate.  We have partnered with many local businesses as well as a local church to support our families as the needs arise.
