The Gifted Program is coordinated through the Special Education Department at Markville Secondary School.  Through Gifted level courses, students are given many opportunities to explore topics with greater depth and breadth and at an accelerated pace.  The program is designed to encourage students to maximize their learning potential through a variety of exciting learning experiences and challenges.  Students who have been identified by Identification Placement Review Committee as Gifted can take the Grade 9 and 10 Gifted courses.

Grade 9 and 10 Courses

At Markville SS we offer six courses in Grade 9 and five courses in the Grade 10 at the gifted level.  Students are required to take a minimum of four courses at the gifted level in each of grade 9 and grade 10. 

The courses offered in Grade 9 at the Gifted level are:

Business (BTT1DG)

English (ENG1DG)

French (FSF1DG)

Geography of Canada (CGC1DG)

Mathematics (MPM1DG)

Science (SNC1DG)

The courses offered in Grade 10 at the Gifted level are:

English (ENG2DG)

French (FSF2DG)

Canadian History Since World War I (CHC2DG)

Mathematics (MPM2DG)

Science (SNC2DG)

Elective Courses

Students will also take elective courses while in the Gifted Program.  Markville offers a variety of exciting elective courses for students to broaden their interests and abilities in the areas of Business, Computer Studies, Dramatic Arts, Family Studies, International Languages, Music, and Visual Arts.

Learning Strategies GLE101 (grade 9) or GLE201 (grade 10)

This course focuses on the learning strategies necessary to become better, independent learners.  It is tailored to students who have organization, anxiety or time management challenges and is designed to support individual needs.  Learning Strategies enable students to maximize their learning potential and improve their achievement with focused support in each of the courses they are taking.

Grade 9-12

Students who are in the Gifted Program in Grades 9 and 10, identified through IPRC, have PI (Partially Integrated) support during these two years of study.  In Grades 11 and 12, Gifted students move to IS (Indirect Service) support.  They will have opportunities to continue to expand their knowledge through a large variety of courses offered through each department as well as highly motivating and challenging AP (Advance Placement level) courses that are offered at Markville Secondary School.
