This course emphasizes regular participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living. Students will explore movement principles, basic game strategies and ways to improve their personal fitness, all through the lens of critical thinking. Students will also investigate issues related to healthy sexuality, substance use and abuse, mental health and healthy eating. Activities will be designed to help students learn how to set and monitor personal goals, make decisions, as well as build effective leadership, communication and social skills. Enrichment activities for the course may include a self-defense program. Students are required to wear a Phys. Ed. uniform that can be purchased at registration for approximately $35. |

Students will learn about the physiological (muscles, bones, joints, etc.), psychological, and social factors that influence an individual’s participation in physical activity, the effects of physical activity on health and performance as well as trends in physical activity and sport. The course prepares students for university programs in kinesiology, health sciences, sciences, health studies, recreation, and sports administration. Enrichment activities for the course may include guest speakers and a trip to a performance/training centre, physical rehabilitation clinic, etc. |

This course enables students to develop the skills needed to plan, organize, and safely implement school-wide and recreational community events related to sports, fitness and health. Students will also learn how to promote the benefits of healthy, active living to others through mentoring and assisting them in making informed decisions that improve their well-being. The course will prepare students for university programs such as kinesiology as well as for college and university programs in recreation and leisure management, fitness and health promotion, and fitness leadership. Students will have an opportunity to plan and implement school and community events, including intramurals, fitness challenges, tournaments, fundraisers and physical activity placements with elementary schools. Enrichment activities for the course may include a leadership retreat to Cedar Glen. |
