Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What are good foods for me to send to school for my child's lunch?

Answer: You want to make sure that you are sending foods to school that are healthy, but do not need to be heated at school as students will not be able to warm their food at school.

You will want to speak with your child to determine if the amount of food that is packed for lunch is a “just right” amount so that food is not wasted, and your child will be feel full and ready to learn. Packing healthy snacks for recess as well as sending water in a water bottle works well for morning recess.

For lunch you will want to send a sandwich (nut products are not permitted on the school premises), water or a healthy juice. Ask your child what they want for lunch, and involve them in the process of packing lunch for school so that they take an interest of what they are eating at school, and can take ownership for making choices with you.

Question: Where is the best place to drop off my child in the morning if I need to drive them to school?

Answer: In the morning Aldergove is only using the outside lane (the lane closest to Aldergrove Dr/furthest away from the school). Please pull down to the end of the laneway before you stop and let your child out. As we are not using the middle lane in the morning, this means that your child will be able to safely make their way to the sidewalk.

Question: It seems that my child does not have enough time to eat all his/her lunch?

Answer: Students are encouraged to eat a snack before/at morning recess (morning recess is 30 minutes). Students also have 20 minutes to eat their lunch before going outside for lunch recess. If you find that your child is returning home with food in their lunch bag, you may want to adjust the amount of food being sent to school and provide a snack for them when they return from school at the end of the day.

Question: Will my child be kept indoors if it is cold or snowing during recess times?

AndAll students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 are expected to go out for every recess unless the principal or vice-principal decides that weather conditions are so poor that it would be detrimental for them to be outdoors.  Students are to come to school ready for winter and prepared to be outdoors up to 40 minutes after lunch.  We always monitor the weather and, in extreme conditions e.g. wind chill; we keep the students indoors or shorten the recess breaks.

Please make sure that your children are dressed properly for our invigorating winter days.  It is advisable for students to bring extra pants and socks. A change is often necessary due to the wet and cold weather of the winter months.  To avoid adding to our clothing collection in the Lost and Found, please be sure to label all articles of clothing.  Boots, hats, mitts/gloves, scarves, and snow pants for the younger children will help make recess an enjoyable time.

Extreme cold weather alerts and measures to reduce exposure to the cold are when temperature and/or wind chill are minus 20 degrees Celsius or below. We always monitor the weather and, in extreme conditions e.g. wind chill; we keep the students indoors or shorten the recess breaks.
