Grade 8 Open House Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the boundaries to attend Bayview Secondary School?

Eligibility to register for Bayview Secondary School is determined by your home address. To determine which Secondary Schools serve your home, please check the York Region District School Board’s School Locator.

Q: If I don’t live in the boundaries, can I transfer to Bayview Secondary School?

No, Bayview Secondary School is not open to transfer students.

Q: How do I register and pick courses at Bayview Secondary School if I am not currently a YRDSB elementary student?

Starting in January, Non-YRDSB students who would like to register for Bayview Secondary School, should contact Bayview’s main office to make a registration appointment. The office phone number is (905) 884 - 4453.

Students will select their courses at the time of registration.

Q: Where do YRDSB students pick courses?

YRDSB students choose their courses on My Pathway Planner. This is done with the support of their grade 8 teacher.

Q: When can I start my Community Involvement?

Grade 8 students can begin their community involvement hours beginning in July after they have completed Grade 8.

Q: How do I track my Community Service experiences?

Students must fill out the community involvement form. Here is a link to the form.

Q: Where do I submit my community involvement form?

Students submit the completed and signed form to their guidance department. You will learn more about this at the beginning of Grade 9.

Q: Where can I volunteer?

Students can volunteer at non-profit organizations. The back of the community involvement form outlines what is eligible and what is ineligible.

Q: I applied to Bayview Secondary School’s IB Programme. When will I find out if I can participate?

Applicants will be notified of their application status before the end of January.

Q: Can I find out the results of my IB Program application?

Individual results and/or standings will not be released.  Submitting the application indicates that you understand and will adhere to this understanding by not requesting the results.

Q: If a student is offered a place in the IB Programme, are they required to accept the offer?

No. Students are offered a placement and will be given a date by which to advise the school if they will be accepting or declining the offer.

Q: If I am not accepted, is there a waiting list?

When application decisions are released, we will advise applicants and their families whether they are on a waiting list.  We will draw students from this waiting list until seats have been filled – up until September of Grade 9.

Q: I missed the application deadline. Can I still apply for the IB Programme this year?

Regrettably, no. The IB application window is now closed and we are no longer able to accept applications.

Q: If I missed the deadline, can I join a waiting list?

After starting grade 9 in September, if students continue to be interested in the IB Programme, they can contact the IB coordinator and ask to be placed on a waiting list for consideration should a space in their cohort become available.

Q: I have taken my Grade 7 and/or 8 Royal Conservatory Music exams, can I get credit for this?

Yes, you will be awarded an elective credit for this achievement. Connect with your guidance counselor to provide copies of your practical and theory results when you are in grade 9.

Q: Can I use my Grade 7 and/or 8 Royal Conservatory Music exam as my required arts credit?

No, the credits awarded are elective only and cannot be used to replace the compulsory arts credit, or the required group 2 credit.
