The Dance program focuses on developing the technique, creativity, and artistry essential for successful dance expression. The curriculum is based on ballet and modern dance with all technique classes accompanied by a professional musician. Theory includes the study of anatomy, injury prevention, nutrition, career choices, dance history and criticism.

Student choreography is developed through improvisation and composition studies. All students have the opportunity to perform their own creations as well as that of staff and guest choreographers in both informal and formal stage settings. There are two dance repertoire companies , Dance Infusion for grade 9 and 10 students and Dance Access for grade 11 and 12. Both companies are contemporary/jazz based courses for credit and rehearse after school. They perform frequently in elementary schools as part of the Outreach Program as well as in our Spring Showcase and Dance Highlights performances in the Markham Theatre.

Dance Admission Requirements:

The student will...

  1. Be led through a one hour dance class of ballet and modern dance. In groups of three or four, students will also be asked to do a short improvisation to show their personal creativity, musicality and self expression.
  2. Be interviewed by the audition panel.
  3. Demonstrate good grooming and wear appropriate dancewear.
    • Girls: leotard and footless tights, soft ballet slippers, hair tied back or in a bun.
    • Boys: shorts and tight fitting t-shirt and soft ballet slippers.
    • No jewelry​ should be worn.

These are the points we cover: posture, muscle tone and strength, flexibility, musicality, grace and flow moving through space, the ability to pick up familiar or unfamiliar dance sequences, the ability to apply correction, the ability to dance without showing undue strain and/or mannerisms, the ability to control nerves; creativity, obvious enjoyment of dance, focus and presentation, academic standing, and poise during the interview.
