The Visual Arts Program provides opportunities for individual creative and imaginative growth as well as developing technical skills. Students will be introduced to experimental and traditional directions in drawing and painting as well as specializing in sculpture, photography, printmaking (etching and silkscreen), digital and video. Complementing the studio components will be studies in the history of art and critical analyses of one's own work. The student's discovery of individual strengths and directions is a prime focus. The cost of field trips and some art supplies is the responsibility of the student.

Visual Arts Admission Requirements:

The student will...

  1. Take part in a three-hour workshop (materials are supplied) where students will be evaluated on their performance in the following areas:
    • Gesture drawing
    • Contour drawing
    • Figure proportion
    • Composition designs
    • Shading skills
  2. Submit a portfolio which will consist of:
    • A self portrait
    • A still life drawing
    • Sketchbook
    • A sculpture or other 3D work*
    • A description of their work that will help the panel in viewing the portfolio. This should include materials used, processes involved and whether the work was done as part of a school assignment, after school art program or done in their free time. The description is to be typed and a maximum of two pages.

*Students may include up to a maximum of three other works in their portfolio. Students must not copy from photographs and are requested to use drawing media such as pencils, ink, oil pastels, charcoal or conte. Works must be original and done without any assistance. A minimum of cartoons and anime is recommended.
