Cooperative Education / Community Based Learning


  • Co-op allows students to test drive their future careers, while gaining valuable skills and hands-on work experience in their field of interest. Students will work with their co-op teacher to secure a suitable placement in the community.


  • Co-op is available to students in grade 11 and 12, in any pathway (College, University, Apprenticeship or Workplace)


  • 2, 3 and 4 credit options available (2 credit am or pm, 4 credit full day)

SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR (SHSM)

Huron Heights SS is proud to offer our students the opportunity to sign up for one of six SHSM sectors. This program allows students to customize their Grade 11 & 12 experience. Students will take a bundle of courses related to their field

of interest, a minimum of 2 co-op credits, and receive a number of free training and certification opportunities.


Choose from: Health and Wellness, Hospitality & Tourism, Transportation, Construction, Manufacturing, Arts & Culture

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP)

Students with placements in an apprenticeable trade automatically become participants in the OYAP. The hours and training students put in at their co-op placements will count towards apprenticeship requirements should they decide to continue with their trade after high school. https://oyap.ca/splash/ 


Accelerated OYAP

This program is available to students in their final semester of high school (Grade 12, Semester 2), and allows students to be signed on as a registered apprentice in their trade, while also completing their Level One Apprenticeship Training at the affiliated college. *NOTE: This program requires an additional application, due in the fall before second semester - Please speak to a co-op teacher directly if interested*

Canadian Armed Forces

This program runs every year in Semester 2 only. Students must sign up for a FULL DAY 4 Credit Co-op. Additional application process is required, and to be submitted directly through the Forces https://forces.ca/en/ who will follow up with students regarding their interview process. This is a PAID placement opportunity. *Speak to a co-op teacher directly if interested in this program - Applications due by October in the previous semester*
