The Visual Arts Department
The Visual Arts Department is committed to maximizing
the artistic potential of every student. We fulfill this mission by providing
students with multiple opportunities to show their art work, encouraging them
to get involved with the art world both in the school and in the community and
by delivering rich and diverse programs. Together these opportunities build
skills and prepare our students for a changing world. See some of our student
work here.

Taking Art at Huron
We have 5 large visual arts studios including a MAC
lab, a digital photography lab, a lighting studio, digital animation and media
arts labs, along with two traditional studios the size of which cannot be beat
anywhere else in the board. Students will have their studies richly
complemented through numerous workshops with guest artists and multiple field
trips in an attempt to tie academic learning and studio practice with real life
applications. Students are encouraged to explore the creative process through a
variety of learning experiences. At Huron we have gone beyond the basic visual
arts courses to allow for students to experience a wide variety of creative
pursuits. Students at Huron have gone on to become creative directors,
animators, fashion designers, film makers and stage designers.

The Visual Arts Council
All students are welcome to be a part of the Visual
Arts Council, an open group that meets every Tuesday from 3:45-5:00. Here
students participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities. VAC
students have created a great number of murals that have been installed in the
community in locations including the Food Pantry, South Lake Regional Health
Centre, YRP Safety Village and area public schools. Students are given
leadership and volunteer hour opportunities as they act as ambassadors for
school events including parent’s nights, open houses and the Santa Claus
Parade. Many of our members are also
active in cross curricular projects such as costume, sets or hair and makeup
design for the school play. Students also have the opportunity to learn new
skills and experiment with materials that interest them such as book binding,
photography, jewelry making, origami, and manga in a community of peers that
also appreciate the arts.
Arts Huron Visual Arts Certificate
Huron is home to one of four regional arts programs in
our board for students who want to immerse themselves in the arts experience.
Entrance is by application and audition. Applications and audition requirements
may be found online. Students are part of an immersive arts community with
workshops, field trips and showcase opportunities.
