The Family Studies and Social Sciences
department encompasses three subject areas: family studies, general social
sciences and equity studies. Although these subject areas are very different
from one another, they all explore the ways in which individuals influence and
are influenced by families, communities, cultures, institutions, and societies,
and by ideas, norms, and values. Our courses emphasize inquiry and
experiential learning opportunities. They provide students with essential
knowledge and transferable skills that are applicable in various areas of their
lives. The department proudly features a state-of-the-art food
technology lab, which rivals many commercial restaurant kitchens and an
impressive fashion classroom. Family Studies courses are offered in
grades 9-12, while equity and social science classes are offered at the senior
level beginning in grade 11.
